Working Day: Andy Procter

Andy Procter is Services Director for MGL, an Edge Lane based ICT Services and Solutions provider working primarily within the education sector.
Andy lives in Mawdesley with his wife Claire and their two boys, Ben 6 and Tom 3.
6.45am Woken by the alarm and begin the daily scramble to get the boys up, fed and dressed and leave the house on time.
7.30am Say goodbye to Claire and Ben and drive to Rufford to drop Tom at his Grandma’s house.
7.45am My working day usually starts during the commute to work and today is no exception. I take a call from one of our engineers who has received an early morning call from Thornton Primary School because their server has crashed. This means that none of their IT is functioning so it’s a priority to get an engineer on site as soon as possible.
8.30am Arrive at the office and speak to Laura, MGL’s Head of Sales Support and Marketing. She has already diverted one of our engineers from another job to Thornton Primary and he will be on site before 9am.
9am Grab half an hour to catch up on emails and familiarise myself with today’s schedule for MGL’s team of 16 engineers.
9.30am Weekly scheduled meeting with our purchasing manager. We go through the equipment that’s on order and she updates me on any supply issues that might affect delivery times to schools.
10.30am Back in the car to travel to Oakwood School in Warrington with our Business Development Director. The head is recently appointed and is keen to look at the overall IT infrastructure of the school and address any underlying technical issues. We spend an hour and a half looking around the school doing an audit of the equipment that is in place and afterwards meet the head to discuss our initial observations on how the school’s technical infrastructure can be improved.
1.00am Was planning to head back to the office but I pick up a voicemail from Laura which diverts me to a school in Knowsley where one of our engineers is having some technical issues with the installation of a Flasma interactive floor in the school hall. The teachers are excited about using the Flasma as a giant piano keyboard for music lessons. Lunch is a sandwich on the hoof.
3.30pm Arrive at Kensington Primary School for a Senior Management meeting. My role is to advise the school on the areas where ICT can help them to deliver the curriculum more successfully. They are particularly interested in the BECTA Home Access programme; a government roll out of free laptops to key stage 2 and key stage 3 pupils who do not have home access to the internet.
6.45pm Home just in time to catch up with the boys and hear about their day at school before they head off to bed.
7.30pm Supper and a cup of tea with Claire before we both switch on our laptops to prepare for the day ahead.
